What Filler Is Best for Me?

If you’re looking for effective wrinkle reducing treatments, it’s likely that you’ve seen some information about dermal fillers floating around. But do you know which type of filler is going to be best for your wrinkles? Here are a few different fillers that might do the trick for you.

Don’t Confuse Dermal Fillers with Botox

Before we get into discussing fillers and their benefits as wrinkle reducers, it’s important to understand the difference between fillers and Botox injections. While both of these cosmetic dermatology treatments are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, they operate in different ways once they’re injected into the skin. Botox works by blocking nerve signals that tell your muscles to contract, effectively temporarily paralyzing the muscles in your face that cause wrinkles like crow’s feet or frown lines. Dermal fillers don’t operate like that at all. Rather, dermal fillers reduce eye wrinkles and the like by filling, plumping, and enhancing the smoothness of the area of your face that’s being treated. So when you’re looking into cosmetic dermatology treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, make sure you understand whether you’re actually thinking of filler or if you’re thinking about Botox.

Juvederm

Juvederm is perhaps one of the most well-known brands of dermal filler. Rather than being a single product, Juvederm represents a collection of dermal fillers that can be used on multiple areas of the face to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. For instance, one type of Juvederm filler might be used to contour and plump the cheeks, while another might plump up the lips or soften up vertical lip lines. This makes Juvederm a great treatment option for reducing the appearance of wrinkles almost anywhere on the face. Each formula operates a little bit differently to benefit one specific part of the face. In addition, one of the main ingredients in Juvederm fillers is hyaluronic acid. This substance, which is naturally created by the body, depletes as you grow older. Its presence in Juvederm also provides a unique benefit if you’re choosing this particular wrinkle treatment. Since hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body, as we mentioned previously, Juvederm poses almost no risk of allergic reactions when injected. This type of filler also tends to last anywhere from six months to over a year (about 18 months) in the majority of patients.

Restylane

Restylane and Juvederm are similar in that each name represents a collection of dermal fillers that can be used for different wrinkle reducing purposes. The original blend of Restylane can help smooth wrinkles and it can help plump up thinner lips. There’s also a specific formula for plumping up and enhancing lips. If you’re dealing with more severe or deep-set wrinkles, there’s a formula for that, too. Restylane Lyft is a much thicker formula and is actually designed to treat deep wrinkles and volume loss in the cheeks. In addition, this formula can actually be used to add volume to the backs of your hands if that’s an area you’d like treated. In most cases, Restylane typically lasts up to six months when used to enhance the lips and up to 18 months when used on the rest of the face.

Whether your goal is to reduce eye wrinkles or get some lost volume back in your cheeks, it’s important to consider what filler is right for you. Have more questions? Set up your consultation with SE Dermatology Specialists today.
